Air Quality in Schools and Children's Exposure to Particulate Pollution in Barcelona

By Ioar Rivas Lara, PhD Thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2015

Exposure to air pollutants has been widely linked to negative health effects, and particularly to respiratory and cardiovascular problems. Moreover, impairments on neurodevelopment are suspicious to also be associated with exposure.

Children in schools constitute a particularly vulnerable population group to indoor air quality, because of their physiological and behavioural characteristics. They have higher ventilation rates and higher levels of physical activity with the result that they receive much higher doses of air pollutants than adults.
